Improve Your Gas Mileage

This is a quick tip to add to all the other advice being passed about on how to reduce your gasoline usage, like consolidating your trips and planning your route to reduce and eliminate the number of stops.

When driving on highways or interstates, stick to a maximum speed of 60 to 65 MPH.

Your mileage may vary (literally), but we’ve seen an improvement along the lines of 5 additional miles per gallon. On a 15 gallon tank, that’s another 75 miles before your fill-up. And if you look around, you’ll notice that most of the professional OTR drivers have slowed down too.

For those of you who worry about taking longer to get to your destination, slowing down from 70 to 65 only adds about 6 minutes to a 100 mile drive. Perhaps you can plan to leave a couple of minutes earlier in the interest of saving money?

  1. Good advice! 75 mpg per tank is like saving three to four gallons of gas in my car. I wouldn’t spill four gallons of gas on the ground but sounds like driving fast is doing the equivalent of just that!

Oh, and the mom in me thanks all you drivers for slowing down a bit. Here’s to money in the pocket and not the gas tank!

  2. Just an update… been driving slower this week and have really seen the savings in my gas mileage. Great tip!
