Getting Your Financial Priorities Straight
Pull out a piece of paper and write down the three most important things in your life right now. Seriously. It shouldn’t take you but a few minutes to identify what you value most. Is it your children? Being fit and healthy? Expanding your knowledge? Having a home that’s uniquely yours? Building your business? Write down your answers. No one has to see them but you.
Now, think back over the last month or so. Where did you spend your time and money? Was it primarily on the three things you just identified as the most important? If not, you now know what you need to start working on.
Do you put fun before family? Are bad habits like smoking and overeating a higher priority than your children? If you’re spending thousands on entertainment and cigarettes and food but not putting money into your retirement or your children’s education, your financial priorities are out of whack.
“It doesn’t matter what you say is important to you, your actions always tell the truth. When you follow the money, you know what someone really loves.” —Larry Winget in You’re Broke Because You Want to Be
