Being an Honest Scrapper
Posted on December 30th, 2008 by Julie Ann Dunn
My friend and fellow aspiring writer, Autumn Heartsong, has honored me with an Honest Scrap Award. The award is for bloggers who post honestly and from the heart, and in order to accept the award, I must:
- list 10 honest things about myself
- nominate 7 other bloggers for an award
So, here goes with my acceptance lists:
Ten things you may find interesting about me:
- I was a passenger (in the backseat) of a car in which two people died when we were struck head-on by a driver stoned on cocaine.
- In the aforementioned auto accident, I sustained a skull fracture and concussion which left me with absolutely no memory of three days of my life.
- I have owned two houses, the first one paid for by check out of the trust fund that resulted from the aforementioned auto accident, the second one still being paid off via the traditional fixed-rate home mortgage loan.
- I believe that if I live long enough, I will have seen or heard about absolutely everything. Boy! Have I heard some doozies in my 40 years!
- I have participated in a firewalking workshop, whereby I walked across both broken glass and hot coals. Remember folks, you can die jumping out of an airplane; when walking on hot coals, you might only get burned—but I didn’t.
- I am the youngest daughter of a retired U.S. Army Lt. Colonel. Over the years, I’ve come to believe that people who have military somewhere in their backgrounds simply have a different worldview. Not better, just different.
- One of the most devastating experiences of my life was when my 7-year-old nephew died after having been kicked in the head by a horse. People, do NOT let your children wander unsupervised in a field with running horses!
- I struggle with an inner voice that tries to tell me that I am not good enough. I really don’t know where that voice comes from, as I’ve always been surrounded by loving, supportive family and friends. Nonetheless, the voice speaks and I have to work to overcome it. Consequently, I’m always amazed when someone gives me positive feedback or praise, especially when I’ve been speaking or writing “off the cuff” without any particular planning or direction.
- I believe that everyone should have some connection to deity, and that there are far too many different people and viewpoints for one God to be a good fit for everyone. Our cultures dictate how we see deity, but whatever names we use for God/Goddess, deity sees us as we truly are, even if we don’t.
- I have a near-obsessive love for Starbucks’ dark chocolate peppermint mocha Frappuccinos. Unfortunately, they’re only available during the Christmas season, and I’ve only got one more in the fridge!
My nominees for the Honest Scrap Award:
Each of these nominees is a blogger that I have thoroughly enjoyed reading, who has given me things to think about as well as blog ideas of my own.
- Jesse Meecham at YouNeedABudget.com
- Nickel at FiveCentNickel.com
- J.D. Roth at GetRichSlowly.org
- Michael B. Rubin at Beyond Paycheck to Paycheck
Sorry, but that’s all the nominees. I really don’t read that many blogs. Maybe you can recommend some?

Julie, you’ve honored the true spirit of the Honest Scrap Award. Your honest and authentic sharing is a great way for us to get to know the woman behind the blog. Thanks for accepting the challenge with such honest grace.
Addendum to my previous comment — about number four…I want to hear the “doozies!”
Julie, I’m honored! Thanks for including me
